What is MIG Welding

When it comes to welding there are many types out there: arc, friction, laser and more. So what is MIG welding? MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding is similar to arc welding that joins two metals by heating them with an arc. The arc forms between the welded surface and filler electrode that is constantly fed. MIG welding also uses a shielding gas to protect the molten metal from reacting with other elements around. So we can further understand what is MIG welding, let us look at the process, its advantages, and what welding PPE gear should be used

What is MIG Welding

How Does MIG Welding Work?

MIG welding uses an electrical welding gun with a chemically treated contact tip, gas hose and nozzle, electrode conduit and gas flow for shielding. An electrode wire is continuously fed through the conduit and creates an arc when it makes contact with the parent metal.

The arc melts the wire, creating a weld for the metal. Once cooled the weld fuses with the parent metal to become a piece of fused metal. During this process the shielding gas makes sure the weld is not affected by atmospheric gases that may weaken it.

Benefits of MIG Welding

  1. Because the welding process runs on a continuously fed electrode wire it is incredibly fast, compared to other welding methods.
  2. It is versatile enough to join a range of different metals together, as well as different thicknesses.
  3. You can weld metal from any position: vertically, horizontally or at an angle.
  4. MIG welding avoidsthe mess and splatter produced by other welding processes, so you will need less clean up.
  5. You can deposit more metal with each pass, speeding up the process and so increasing productivity.
  6. Unlike other processes, MIG welding uses all of the electrode wire to create the weld, avoiding any wastage.
  7. Much of the welding process is automated making it both easy to learn and use.
